Ford Motor

Climate Policy Engagement: Ford receives a grade of C in InfluenceMap’s assessment of corporate engagement on climate change policy, indicating mixed (both positive and negative) engagement with policy to deliver the Paris Agreement.

Forecasted 2030 Production: 53% of Ford's light-duty vehicle production in 2030 is forecast to be electric vehicles (50% battery electric vehicles (BEVs), 3% plug-in hybrids, and 0% fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV)). This compares negatively to the IEA’s 1.5°C scenario, which estimates that 66% of all car and van sales must be electric (BEV, PHEV or FCEV) by 2030 to meet a 1.5°C global temperature goal.

Ford Motor

Climate Lobbying Overview: Ford Motor is actively engaged on climate policy, with mixed but increasingly positive engagement in 2022-24. Ford has mostly positive engagement with US GHG emissions standards and has supported an EU zero-emissions CO2 target of 2035 for light-duty vehicles. However, Ford appeared to oppose the US Corporate Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. Ford retains memberships to some regressive trade associations which have opposed US and EU climate regulation.

Internal decarbonization targets: Ford Motor has set a target of achieving 76% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions and a 50% in Scope 3 emissions by 2035, while aiming for total carbon neutrality by 2050. Ford has set production targets of 600,000 electric vehicles globally by the end of 2023 and 2 million by late 2026. Ford previously set a target of 100% electric vehicle sales in Europe by 2030, which it appeared to abandon in May 2024. The company also aims for 100% of light commercial vehicles to be zero-emission vehicles by 2035. In October 2023, Ford walked back its target of producing 400,000 electric vehicles by mid-2024. Ford has signed the COP26 declaration for all sales of new cars and vans to be zero emission globally by 2040, and by no later than 2035 in leading markets.

Fleet Composition by Vehicle Technology

Number of vehicles produced by all worldwide

Ford's forecasted fleet composition by technology: The IEA determined in its 2023 1.5C road transport scenario that 66% of all light-duty vehicle sales must be electric (battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids) by 2030 to meet the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal. Globally, Ford’s 2030 forecast production is misaligned with the IEA’s scenario. In 2030, Ford is forecast to produce 53% electric vehicles (50% BEVs and 3% PHEVs and 0% FCEV), 9% ICE-powered hybrids and 37% combustion engine.

Fleet Composition by Vehicle Type

Percentage ZEV and PHEVs all produced worldwide

Ford's forecasted vehicle size: Larger vehicles are a significant cause of increased GHG emissions from road transport, with smaller vehicles across different technologies generally producing fewer emissions. Ford’s 2023 combined percentage proportion of SUVs and light commercial vehicles is approximately 92%, however, this proportion is projected to increase to 98% through 2030.

Electric Vehicle Production

Percentage of electric vehicles (battery, fuel cell and plug-in hybrid) produced from total fleet

Ford's electric vehicle production compared: 54% of Ford’s vehicles produced in 2030 are forecast to be electric (battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids or fuel cell electric vehicles), compared to an average of 53% for all automakers.
