Renault

Climate Policy Engagement: Renault receives a grade of D+ in InfluenceMap’s assessment of corporate engagement on climate change policy, indicating misalignment with policy to deliver the Paris Agreement.

Forecasted 2030 Production: 34% of Renault's light-duty vehicle production in 2030 is forecast to be electric vehicles (33% battery electric vehicles (BEVs), 0% plug-in hybrids, and 1% fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV)). This compares negatively to the IEA’s 1.5°C scenario, which estimates that 66% of all car and van sales must be electric (BEV, PHEV or FCEV) by 2030 to meet a 1.5°C global temperature goal.

Renault

Climate Lobbying Overview: Renault Group appears to have both negative and positive engagement on climate change policy globally in 2022-24. While the company has broadly positive top-line messaging on climate policy, it appears to have advocated to delay the EU's 2035 zero-emissions CO2 target to promote a longer-term role of internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered hybrid vehicles.

Internal decarbonization targets: Renault has set a target of reaching carbon neutrality in Europe by 2040 and globally by 2050. The company has also set an interim target of reducing its CO2 emissions in use (tailpipe and fuels production) by 50% by 2030 (2010 baseline) in Europe. It has pledged that "every new model launched under the Renault brand will be electric or electrified" by 2025. The company does not appear to have specified whether "electrified" includes hybrid vehicles. Renault aims for 100% of its sales to be ZEVs in Europe by 2035. Renault is also a part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, which announced a new platform in January 2022 to release 35 new EV cars in 2030 by sharing each other’s platforms.

Fleet Composition by Vehicle Technology

Number of vehicles produced by all worldwide

Renault's forecasted fleet composition by technology: The IEA determined in its 2023 1.5C road transport scenario that 66% of all light-duty vehicle sales must be electric (battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids) by 2030 to meet the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal. Globally, Renault’s 2030 production forecast is misaligned with the IEA’s scenario. In 2030, Renault is forecast to produce 34% electric vehicles (33% BEVs, 0% PHEVs and 1% FCEV), 41% ICE-powered hybrids and 25% combustion engine.

Fleet Composition by Vehicle Type

Percentage ZEV and PHEVs all produced worldwide

Renault's forecasted vehicle size: Larger vehicles are a significant cause of increased GHG emissions from road transport, with smaller vehicles across different technologies generally producing fewer emissions. Renault’s 2023 combined percentage proportion of SUVs and light commercial vehicles is approximately 49%, however this proportion is projected to increase to 57% through 2030.

Electric Vehicle Production

Percentage of electric vehicles (battery, fuel cell and plug-in hybrid) produced from total fleet

Renault's electric vehicle production compared: 34% of Renault’s vehicles produced in 2030 are forecast to be electric (battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids or fuel cell electric vehicles), compared to an average of 53% for all automakers.
